Shell Control Box Administrator Guide updates

Wednesday, February 10, 2010 @ 01:02 PM Author: Robert Fekete

Running a bit late after the release of SCB 2.0.2, updated versions of the Shell Control Box Administrator Guide are available at the BalaBit Documentation Page. It is not that SCB 2.0.2 had that many visible changes, just many smaller problems and corrections about the SCB admin guide piled up since the last release, so the third edition contains close to fifty changes, corrections and clarifications.

I also made some corrections to the SCB 1.1 Administrator Guide, so if you are still running 1.x, you might want to download the new edition for reference.

And if you are planning an upgrade to SCB 2.0, don’t forget to download the latest version of the upgrade guide, because it contains some important clarifications.

Cisco and syslog-ng

Thursday, February 4, 2010 @ 11:02 AM Author: Robert Fekete

Last year Clayton Dukes from Cisco, the developer of LogZilla (formerly called php-syslog-ng) wrote a whitepaper about syslog management solutions using syslog-ng. Now a colleague of mine found another Cisco whitepaper about integrating syslog-ng and CiscoWorks LMS.

Googling around a bit on the Cisco site revealed many more references to syslog-ng. For example, I learned that the Cisco ASA 5500 Series Content Security and Control Security Services Module (which is actually a Trend Micro stuff) is running syslog-ng, at least a sample output in some docs about its console mode says The CSC SSM Syslog-ng service is running. Does anyone know which syslog-ng version they use?

Another flattering thing I found in a whitepaper about high-availability solutions was the following line: An excellent solution for forwarding/repeating syslog event messages that will preserve headers is the Balabit Syslog-NG product.

Ain’t it great when you see that your work is acknowledged?
